SAN JUAN — Just days before the Juneteenth National Independence Day, which commemorates the end of slavery, Roseann Bacha-Garza, an anthropology lecturer at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, hosted descendants of the site’s namesakes where they once risked everything to help slaves escape to freedom.

McALLEN — Bishop Daniel E. Flores of the Brownsville Diocese held Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Tuesday morning commemorating the ten-year anniversary of the Humanitarian Respite Center.

BROWNSVILLE — A host of members from the public and veterans attended Cameron County’s largest Memorial Day ceremony here on Monday.

EDINBURG — More than 100 veterans, city leaders and community members attended the city of Edinburg’s Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony Friday. Attendees watched tributes, musical performances and a moment of silence amid a sea of flags honoring fallen veterans. The whole crowd stood as Giuliani Garcia of Robert Vela High School, 17, played taps.

Edinburg Parks and Recreation, for the first time, hosted a Junior Olympic boxing tournament over the weekend with 478 registered boxers and more than 300 coaches and officials.

BROWNSVILLE — The Dean Porter Park Renovation Inc. unveiled a life-sized sculpture of legendary aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart on Tuesday at Dean Porter Park to memorialize her connection here.
