HARLINGEN — Sister Act’s exaggerated comedic antics and eloquent vocal performances convinced the young audience they were seeing an authentic and crafted presentation.
“It’s good to see everyone expressing their talent and seeing the school and community come out to support them,” said Javier Gonzalez, 17, a senior at Harlingen High School.
He and hundreds of other local school children — from Harlingen and nearby environs — gathered Thursday at the Harlingen Performing Arts Conservatory to see the preview of “Sister Act” before it’s public showing on Saturday.
The conservatory students have spent weeks getting ready for the show.
Wednesday afternoon their directors put them through the rigors of fine tuning, articulating, transitioning, and moving – and it showed.
Thursday morning’s performance delighted audiences as they broke into spontaneous clapping to the beat of solo musical performances that provided a fine balance to the shows hilarious nature.
“I really like the singing and the band that’s playing,” Javier said.
Middle school students also enjoyed the event and had a firm handle on the accomplishment of the production.
“They did an amazing job putting it together,” said Mylie Vega, 13, an eighth grader at Gutierrez Middle School of Arts and Sciences.
“The characters, the acting, the singing,” she added, “everything is super good.”
Fellow Gutierrez Middle School student Julian Cordova, 13, was excited about the performance as he walked around during intermission.
“I really liked the first act,” he said. “I am enjoying all the music.”
So too was Briana Cavazos, 17, an HHS junior.
“I am enjoying the singing and acting as well, seeing everything that’s gone into it,” she said.
