The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information from witnesses following the arrest of a former Edcouch-Elsa teacher arrested Tuesday and charged with an inappropriate relationship with a student, according to Thursday’s news release.

Raul Cesar Diaz, 32, from Donna, turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened when Diaz served as a teacher at Edcouch-Elsa High School, but no information was given about the school year in which the incident happened.

The school district’s superintendent, Dr. Greg Rodríguez, provided some insight in a brief statement he sent to The Monitor.

“Raul Diaz has not been employed with Edcouch-Elsa ISD since December of 2021. We have no further comment on personnel matters,” the statement said.

He was charged with one count of an improper relationship between an educator and student. Justice of the Peace Jason Peña set bond at $500.

Jail records show Diaz was booked on Tuesday and released on Wednesday.

“We encourage witnesses with any additional information regarding this case to come forward,” the news release stated. “We urge you to please contact the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office at 956-383-8114.
