Edinburg PD completes look into bus death of Harlingen student

HARLINGEN — The investigation into the death of a Vernon Middle School student who died while on a school trip after falling from the emergency exit of a moving school bus apparently has ended.

“All I can tell you is that at this point in time, the case, or the investigation, is going to be classified as a suicide,” Assistant Police Chief Oscar Trevino of the Edinburg Police Department said late yesterday afternoon.

“We are not releasing any more information other than that out of respect for the family.”

The teenager, 13-year-old Gabriel Miranda Jr., was transported back from Edinburg on Tuesday with an escort provided by the Harlingen Police Department.

The bus was on U.S. 281 en route from Harlingen to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley campus in Edinburg for a field trip on Monday.

Somehow, the latch that holds the emergency door at the rear of the bus closed was turned, the door opened, and Gabriel fell to his death.
