New school on the way

SAN PERLITA — Next year, more than 150 students will be learning in a new school, with new furniture and computers.

The San Perlita School District recently broke ground to begin building its new elementary school.

The cost of the project is estimated to be about $2.4 million and building is expected to be complete by next fall.

Money to build the new school came from the 2015 $3 million school bond election that was approved in a landslide 92-14 vote.

“We had many people from the community and elected officials attend the groundbreaking ceremony,” said Albert Pena, San Perlita superintendent. “We had a good groundbreaking turnout.”

Due to the weather the groundbreaking was moved into the cafeteria.

Students addressed the community at the ground breaking with opening remarks.

“We are so glad to have a school because some kids all over the world are not lucky enough to be able to go to school,” said Summer Terry, fifth grade elementary student class secretary. “Our school is like a home to us because we spend so much time here and I believe it should be a safe place for us.”

The new building will cover approximately 12,000 square feet. It will have nine classrooms, plus science and computer labs and offices.
