A longtime Brownsville bail bondsman and semi-retired civil process server announced Wednesday that he’s taking a second shot at running for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2, Place 2.
Fred Martinez will file as a Democrat for the justice of the peace position in the upcoming March 2018 primary. Jonathan Gracia, the current JP who was elected in 2014, is seeking re-election.
Martinez, who ran for this same office and lost during the mid-1990s, said there’s a combination of reasons he feels he is the right fit for the office.
“One is I’m retired, so I have all the time in the world to give to this office, which is needed,” Martinez said, adding that he believes the office has a backlog of small claims cases that need to be cleaned up. “It’s running behind, and I feel I can really improve that.”
He also said his years of experience as a bail bondsman and involvement in civil processing has familiarized him with justice of the peace operations.
