Palm Valley Animal Society is asking for the community's help to keep its furry friends warm from the oncoming cold.

EDINBURG — Six months after county officials here were heavily considering severing ties with Palm Valley Animal Society over the rising costs of animal control services, they have partially reversed course.

HARLINGEN — It looks like city officials are taking on the city-owned animal shelter’s operations.

From political shakeups to rising taxes, to controversies over courthouse construction and stray pet placements, 2023 saw a lot of buzzworthy headlines across Hidalgo County.

The Palm Valley Animal Shelter is partnering with the city of McAllen to host a free microchip clinic for pets of McAllen residents.

Palm Valley Animal Society is looking for someone to give a Doberman brought in by animal control, the home he deserves.

During the past 18 years, I’ve had a front-row seat to the horrors and the vast improvements in the treatment of the Valley’s stray animals. To watch Hidalgo County officials seriously investigate building and running their own large-intake facility means going back in time, back to some dark days and backward thinking when animal control officers were referred to as “dog catchers” and the “dog pound” was where animals went to die.

Hidalgo County leaders moved one step closer to potentially severing the county’s decades-long relationship with Palm Valley Animal Society by approving an amendment to an animal control center feasibility study.
