HALRINGEN — As a child, Leonardo Robb was fascinated with the sound of airplanes. Now the Dallas resident is a maintenance training instructor at Envoy Air, a subsidiary of American Airlines Group.

Robb earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Aircraft Powerplant Technology from Texas State Technical College’s Harlingen campus in 2008 and was an aviation maintenance instructor at the college from 2010 to 2017.

“I was hired as an aircraft mechanic with Envoy Air in 2017,” he said. “I received a promotion to become a maintenance training instructor with the company two years later.”

Robb finds the work culture at Envoy Air energizing.

“The diversity is amazing, and I enjoy educating our technicians.”

Carlos Fast is a lead maintenance training instructor at Envoy Air.

“Leonardo has continued to apply himself through his passion to achieve more,” he said. “He understands the challenges his students will face when they learn modern aircraft with complex avionics and fly-by-wire systems. He tirelessly studies training material to understand the systems and simplify that aircraft operation for his students to comprehend.”

“I truly enjoy teaching the students because they studied and trained hard to get hired as an aircraft technician,” Robb said of his current job. “TSTC prepared me for what became my career at Envoy Air.”

Tom Cross is a TSTC aviation maintenance instructor.

“Leonardo has an incredible passion for aviation, and that inspires others in their pursuit of an aviation maintenance career,” he said. “He has the ability to explain things in different ways in order for individuals to grasp the material.”

According to onetonline.org, aircraft mechanics and service technicians in Texas earn an average of $67,680 a year. The website projected that there would be a 16% increase in such jobs in the state from 2020 to 2030.

TSTC offers Associate of Applied Science degrees and certificates of completion in both Aircraft Powerplant Technology and Aircraft Airframe Technology at its Abilene, Harlingen and Waco campuses.

Santa Maria’s Mia Picazo signs with UTRGV

SANTA MARIA — Santa Maria cross country and track standout Mia Picazo is continuing her running career close to home.

Really close.

Picazo signed with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley — where she is set to run cross country and the 800-meter run — on Wednesday at Santa Maria High School.

“It is pretty exciting,” Picazo said about the opportunity to be a part of an NCAA Division I track program as well as staying in the Valley to do it. “I think it is going to be a good experience.”

Picazo is a multi-sport athlete for the Class 2A Cougars, but it is cross country and the track where Picazo excels.

Santa Maria girls track and field coach Alicia Perez and boys coach Margarito Jimenez have seen Picazo grow into a state-qualifying cross country athlete and one of the best 800-meter runners in the state in Class 2A.

Picazo finished fourth in the 800 at the Class 2A state meet in 2023. This upcoming track season, Picazo hopes to finish top three and also qualify in the 400. Picazo came in fourth in the 400 at the Region IV meet in 2023.

“She has progressed a lot,” Perez said.

Perez praised Picazo’s parents for helping their daughter succeed — Picazo comes from a family of runners that represented Santa Maria — and Picazo’s dedication to the sport, especially the offseason.

Jimenez and Perez also recognized Picazo’s willingness to be a coach as well with her impact on other Santa Maria athletic and extracurricular programs.

“She is going to put Santa Maria on the map when it comes to track,” Jimenez said. “I hope this brings more athletes to do track this year.”

Picazo plans to study kinesiology while attending UTRGV in the fall of 2024.

The track and field season begins in early February.

Panthers power past Greyhounds, 5-0 in 32-6A; Class 6A/1A roundup

SAN BENITO — Weslaco High’s Rae Medina scored 22 points, Flash Magallanes finished with 15 and Drya Arredondo chipped in with 11 to help propel the Panthers over San Benito 56-44 on Friday night at San Benito High School.

The win moves the Panthers into first place in District 32-6A at 5-0. The Greyhounds fall to second place with a 4-1 record.

The Panthers built a double-digit lead in the second half thanks to intense defense and important buckets from Magallanes, Medina and Arredondo after going down early.

Weslaco High head coach Griselda Fino said the shots were clutch, but singled out Medina for being able to play tonight while having the flu. Medina said she felt good-to-go during the day, but once she showed up to the gym tonight she started feeling dizzy.

“She is just a warrior,” Fino said. “Like I have said before, she is our only senior on the team and she just gives it everything she has. And Flash hit some big shots today too. Those are things we work on at practice and things we keep drilling.

“We are super small, the world’s smallest team, but we can play inside and outside – we just have to find the right combination.”

Medina scored seven of her 22 points in the fourth quarter. The senior point guard finished a reverse layup with contact after grabbing an offensive rebound. Medina knocked down the free-throw to put the Panthers back up 10 after Greyhounds junior guard Angie Reyes cut the lead to seven the previous possession with a 3-pointer.

“I was getting face guarded and we were kind of everywhere, I needed to do something,” Medina said. “I knew I needed to go in there, rebound an go back up. We work hard in the weight room and I wanted to show it off.”

Reyes led the Greyhounds in scoring with 14 points, and senior Jakeida Ibarra pitched in with 10.

The Greyhounds and Panthers went back and forth during the third quarter, but it was Weslaco High that threw the final punch when Victoria Trevino drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give her team a 41-32 lead.

Weslaco High did not grab a lead until late in the second quarter after a slow start. The Panthers ramped up the defensive intensity, forcing turnovers and draining 3-pointers. Magallanes scored 11 points for the Panthers, including three 3-pointers as they went on a 18-5 run to close out the half up 26-20.

San Benito started strong with nice shot selection to build an early 9-3 lead and carried that momentum into the second quarter, when they went up 15-8.

The second round for District 32-6A begins Tuesday with Weslaco High on the road against Harlingen High at 6 p.m. San Benito is at home to Brownsville Hanna at 6 p.m., and Brownsville Rivera hosts Los Fresnos at 6 p.m. as well.

Fino said Weslaco High is taking it one game at a time.

“Things do not get easier, we are in the toughest district. San Benito, Los Fresnos, Rivera and Harlingen coming up – they are all tough – we are all really tough teams so it is a matter of bring it every single night,” Fino said.

HARLINGEN HIGH 66, LOS FRESNOS 30

Harlingen High moved into third place in District 32-6A with the 36-point win over Los Fresnos at Harlingen High.

The Cardinals hit seven 3-pointers, five in the first quarter as they jumped out to a first quarter double-digit lead. Harlingen High’s Abigail Garcia finished with a game-high 17 points.

Harlingen High’s Sarah Sanusi and Amaris Martinez finished with 11 points each. Los Fresnos’ Shiloh Jones had a team-high 12 points and Nadali Lozano scored 11.

DISTRICT 31-6A

The top four teams in District 31-6A was in action Friday night. Edinburg High defeated PSJA High 80-29 in a matchup between first and fourth.

The Bobcats have outscored their district opponents 402-154 with a 5-0 record after the first round of play. Edinburg High is on pace to win the district with two games to spare.

MISSION HIGH 52, LA JOYA HIGH 34

Mission High is now in second place in District 31-6A and on a four-game win streak. The Coyotes and the Eagles came into the night tied at 3-1.

Eagles senior center Kaitlyn Richardson led the game in scoring with 11 points. The Coyotes were led by Cynthia Longoria with nine points.

The Coyotes are now in third at 3-2, but could move back into a tie with Mission High on Tuesday because the Eagles face the Bobcats at 6 p.m. at home. La Joya High takes on Edinburg North at 6 p.m. at North.

La Joya High only beat Edinburg North 37-29 in the first round.

TILDEN McMULLEN 44, SAN PERLITA 29

San Perlita trailed 12-11 early in the second quarter, but Tilden McMullen slowly pulled away to come out with a 15-point victory to move to 6-0 in District 31-1A.

Trojans head coach Marco Mungia said even though his team came up short he feels it was a moral victory because of how well his team competed and stuck with one of the best Class 1A teams in the region.

“I thought we played well despite some of our mistakes and so on,” Mungia said. “We are going to keep going and win out.”

Mungia said San Perlita’s focus shifts on second place after falling to 3-3. The Trojans lost to San Isidro in a close game on Wednesday that sets up a possible battle for second when two teams meet again in February – depending on how San Isidro fares against Tilden in the second meeting.

San Isidro lost to Tilden 42-38 early in the season.

San Perlita’s Summer Terry led the Trojans in scoring with 13 points. Tilden’s Camie Taylor had a game-high 19 points.

Harlingen grinds win over Los Fresnos, extends streak to 22

The Harlingen High Cardinals extended their winning streak to 22-straight games after taking down the Los Fresnos Falcons 80-78 in a matchup of District 32-6A powers Friday at Harlingen High School.

The Cardinals improve to 27-3 overall and 3-0 in district, while the Falcons drop to 22-7 and 2-1 in 32-6A play.

“Los Fresnos is a very talented team with very talented players and coached extremely well, so we knew it was going to be a battle,” Harlingen head coach Clayton Cretors said. “We knew it was going to be a fast-paced, high-scoring, back-and-forth game. When we hit 13 3s, it’s tough to beat us, but a lot of credit to Los Fresnos. They stayed in the game and kept going body blow for body blow, and that’s what you want when you have two great teams going at it. I think we made each other better tonight and we feel fortunate that we were able to come out tonight on top and move to 3-0 in district.”

The Cardinals drilled 13 3-pointers against the Falcons, including eight during the second half, to secure the district victory. Senior Andrew Galdamez led the Cardinals with seven makes from beyond the arc as he finished with a game-high 26 points.

“I think it was not giving up, pushing the pace and trusting our teammates. I just felt confident, I was open and I just trusted my own shot,” Galdamez said. “

Luis Rodriguez had 13 points with three made 3s, and Joaquin Cisneros added 11 points off the Harlingen bench to provide a spark during the second and fourth quarters.

The Falcons fought until the final buzzer as buckets from Gio Galvan, Andrew Munoz and JJ Salazar kept Los Fresnos within striking distance. Galvan finished with a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Salazar posted a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Munoz scored 16 for Los Fresnos.

Los Fresnos will look to bounce back against Brownsville Rivera at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brownsville Rivera High School in Brownsville. Meanwhile, Harlingen High will look to extend its winning streak to 23 when the Cardinals face Weslaco High at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Harlingen High School.

The Cardinals haven’t lost a game since Nov. 21 against Corpus Christi Carroll.

“I think it’s just a perfect mixture of kids. You never expect to lose games, but you never expect to go on a 22-game streak, either — there’s just too many talented teams out there,” Cretors said. “There’s been some fortunate plays that have gone our way in the streak, and I don’t think you have streaks like that unless you get a little lucky, and we have, but luck is the product of preparation. The more you prepare, the luckier you get, and we’re just riding that wave right now. These kids are hungry still. We want to be undefeated district champs and they’re playing hard for it right now. They’re a bunch of tough individuals. They play very well as a team and are a tight-knit group, and I think the combination of all that has led to the success that we’re having this year.”

Late goal lifts Diamondbacks past Raiders, improve to 3-0 in district

PHARR — PHARR — Sharyland Pioneer sophomore Jared Arevalo scored the go-ahead goal with five minutes remaining and the Diamondbacks edged past the PSJA North Raiders 3-2 during a District 31-5A contest Friday at PSJA North High School.

Arevalo finished the night with a brace and an assist, all coming during the second half. PSJA North forward Diego Maldonado scored both goals for the Raiders.

The victory improves the Diamondbacks to 3-0-0 in District 31-5A, already surpassing their district win total from last year.

“Man, these first couple of games, honestly it all started with the beginning of the year,” Sharyland Pioneer head coach Gilberto Alanis said. “These kids came in hungry. We’ve been dealing with a couple of issues here and there, but these kids are hungry and want to play. I think the kids have really bought into what we are selling and now we’re here.”

After a scoreless first half, the teams erupted during the second, with Maldonado getting the scoring started with a goal during the 50th minute.

The Raiders’ lead was short lived, with Arevalo knotting the game just two minutes later with his first goal of the night, heading the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick.

Maldonado wasn’t done yet, however, giving the Raiders the lead once again with his second goal of the night just three minutes later.

It was all Diamondbacks after Maldonado’s second goal, with Arevalo finding Hector Veliz in the box for the game-tying goal during the 66th minute, following it up by scoring the game-winning goal during the 75th minute.

Arevalo finished the night with a brace and an assist, all coming during the second half. PSJA North forward Diego Maldonado scored both goals for the Raiders.

“It feels great,” Arevalo said. “We started off kind of slow, but we picked it up and came back. This year it is just different. Things have changed and I’m just proud of this team. We have a more positive mindset and have tried to forget about last year and move forward.”

The Diamondbacks (3-0-0) look to stay perfect at 6 p.m. Tuesday, hosting McAllen High (2-1-0) at Diamondback Stadium in Mission. The Raiders (2-1-0) look to bounce back at 6 p.m. Tuesday, taking on the PSJA Memorial Wolverines (2-1-0) at PSJA Memorial.
