Rene O. Oliveira, the Brownsville native and former state lawmaker, who died suddenly on Tuesday at the age of 68, was proud of what he was able to accomplish during his many years serving in the Texas House of Representatives, according to his son, Rene O. Oliveira Jr.

The elder Oliveira, who served in the Legislature from 1982 to 2019, was a former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and also served on the House Business and Industry Committee, State Affairs Committee and Redistricting Committee.

Rene Jr. said his father’s list of awards and accomplishments are “too many to recount.”

“He loved this community and spent his life working and fighting for this community,” he said. “He was proud of being named a champion for children and always fighting for education and all those kinds of things. That was very important to him. I know one of the things that he was proud of and that he worked a lot on was bringing the medical school to the Valley, getting the (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine) here.

“He was also involved in bringing SpaceX down here and really wanted to bring all those jobs to the Valley. Education was always big for him.”

Oliveira, who would have turned 69 in March, also helped create UTRGV and its precursor, the University of Texas at Brownsville.

Rene Jr. said his father was also proud of his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee. Oliveira, who earned his law degree from the UT School of Law and served 17 terms in the Legislature, was defeated in the 2018 Democratic primary by Alex Dominguez.

Oliveira and his son had practiced law together at the Brownsville-McAllen firm Roerig, Oliveira & Fisher, where Oliveira had been a senior partner and Rene Jr. is still a partner, until his father formed a solo practice in recent years.

“He wasn’t retired but he was slowing down I guess it’s fair to say, and was just working as much as he wanted to and still helping people,” Rene Jr. said. “He was always a great dad, and when my daughter was born became a great grandpa. He really enjoyed I think being a grandfather these last 7 1/2 years or so. I know his granddaughter’s going to miss him very much.”

Oliveira also leaves behind a daughter, Adrienne Palmer of Houston.

Sierra Club asks TPWD to delay vote on SpaceX land swap at Boca Chica

The Sierra Club is urging the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to delay a vote Thursday on a proposed land swap SpaceX has requested involving its Starbase production and testing complex at Boca Chica.

The company wants 43 acres of Boca Chica State Park to “expand its operational footprint around its launch facilities” in exchange for giving TPWD 477 acres SpaceX owns near the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. TPWD has recommended approving the swap internally, and a resolution approving the land transfer is on the agenda for TPWD’s meeting in Austin tomorrow.

The resolution says the transfer would “provide increased public recreational opportunities including hiking, camping, water recreation, and wildlife viewing, and allow for greater conservation of sensitive habitats for wintering and migratory birds.”

The Sierra Club is urging TPWD to delay the vote, Conservation Director Cyrus Reed citing in a letter what he characterized as a “rushed and non-inclusive process” leading up to the vote, preceded by a public comment period ending today at 5 p.m.

“We have serious concerns about the proposed transfer, and we don’t believe TPWD followed code in the way it provided the public with notice about this controversial proposal,” he said. “The agency also, as far as we know, failed to provide public notice in Spanish and in Spanish-language news outlets. This is an important decision involving state lands, and the public deserves the right to know and provide input before a decision is rushed through on behalf of a private developer like SpaceX.”

Brownsville field organizer Emma Guevara said TPWD did not engage the community regarding the proposed swap and that “we were all blindsided.”

“With the rushed public notices, and that these were not available in Spanish, we suspect the agency wants to speed this along,” she said. “We know that TPWD can include the community in decisions when it wants to — it did this with oyster harvesting — so we urge it to delay the meeting and truly provide the people with a chance to participate and respond.”

Public feedback on the proposed transfer can be sent via email until 5 p.m. today to Trey Vick, TPWD project manager, at [email protected], or through TPWD’s website.

A judge charged a 23-year-old San Benito man on Tuesday in a case in which his car hit a 59-year-old bicyclist.

Antonio Rogelio Saenz, Jr. was being held in the Cameron County Detention Center facing charges of criminal negligent homicide in the death of Rodrigo Villarreal of San Benito, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a press release.

A preliminary investigation found Saenz was driving behind Villarreal as he rode a bicycle, both traveling northbound on FM 732 north of U.S. 281, when the black Honda Civic hit the cyclist, “causing the rider to go airborne and land on the windshield of the Honda,” at about 1:16 p.m. just inside San Benito city lines, officials said in the press release.

The crash happened on Jan. 3.

Semi truck driver killed in Starr County crash and diesel spill

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating a one-vehicle semi-trailer crash that left a Donna man dead around midnight Wednesday.

A hazmat crew arrived in the vicinity of Farm-to-Market Road 755 and FM 1017 in La Gloria in response to a semi-trailer crash, according to a DPS news release.

Nearly 4,000 gallons of diesel had spilled from the semi as a result, authorities said.

The 2011 Kenworth truck tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on FM 1017 when the driver, later identified as Donna resident Juan Carlos Mendoza Jr., 36, disregarded a stop sign causing it to crash into a fence and tree. They prevented the semi from crashing into a residence, according to the release.

Mendoza Jr. died at the scene due to his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Weslaco East powers past Brownsville Veterans in 32-5A clash

WESLACO District 32-5A’s first-place team, Weslaco East, created some distance between itself and the field after running past second-place Brownsville Veterans 58-50 on Tuesday at Weslaco East High School.

The Wildcats improve to 21-7 overall and 12-0 in district play, while the Chargers drop to 20-8 and 10-2 in 32-5A action. East topped Brownsville Veterans 60-37 in their first meeting on Dec. 19 in Brownsville.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game. Everybody makes adjustments the second rounds and I knew they were going to make adjustments,” East head coach Zeke Rodriguez said. “I preach to the boys that they’re trying to take something away from us, which is that district title that we’ve been working really hard for. I think we took control early on, then we had some quick shots and let it go, but we got the job done.”

Zion Rodriguez led the Wildcats with a game-high 22 points and five rebounds. Rodriguez drilled four 3-pointers and converted some tough finishes inside for East. Emi Duran knocked down three from long range to finish with 15. Jediah Rivens also posted a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.

“We knew they would be ready so we had to come in focused and prepared. We’re trying to go undefeated and get that district championship,” Zion Rodriguez said.

Alex Martinez made his presence felt off the East bench with four points, seven boards, two assists, two steals and one block, and helped the Wildcats build a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half with tough finishes down low and pesky defense on the other end.

Pablo Castaneda led the charge from Brownsville Veterans with 17 points, and Andrew Capistran added 12 off the bench. Nick Tovar chipped in with eight points.

The Wildcats will look to remain unbeaten in district as they take on Mercedes at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mercedes High School in Mercedes. Next for the Chargers is Donna North at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Donna North High School in Donna.

Pena’s big save gives South shootout win over Edcouch-Elsa

Harlingen South's Kayren Vasquez (14) celebrated with goalkeeper Priscilla Pena and other teammates after Pena made the final save during a shootout to give the Hawks a win in PKs over Edcouch-Elsa on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2024 (Henry Miller / [email protected])

After scoring 25 goals during their first three district matches with an offense that was firing on all cylinders, Harlingen South found itself in a shootout on the road after a 1-1 game and counting on goalkeeper Priscilla Pena.

When the fifth Edcouch-Elsa shooter first touched the ball, Pena knew she had it. She made the save and the Hawks won in penalty kicks, 4-3, after a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.

The win keeps Harlingen South in first place with 11 points, taking two of the three eligible match points and improved their record to 3-0-1. Edcouch remains alone in second in District 32-5A with a 3-0-1 mark, but earned just one point for the tie.

“We needed one of these games,” Pena said. “This shows the true colors of our team and what we have to do and bring to the upcoming games in our district.

“Honestly, I knew I was going to save that last one. It’s just that feeling you get. I knew I was going to top it. I trust where I need to go. When she hit it I felt relief – this is it, this is our win.”

Leila Barco scored less than four minutes into the match. It was the eighth goal of the season for the district scoring leader.

“That (goal) was on me. It was my fault,” Pena said. “It was just one of those moments where you pause and I just had a brain fart. I told the girls, ‘That’s not going to happen again.’”

Harlingen South then dominated time of possession the remainder for what was a physical first half.

Alejandra Posada scored her second goal of the season for the Hawks at about the same time of the second half to tie the match. At the time, Edcouch was sitting back playing defense with all 11 players within 30 yards of their own goal. The Yellow Jackets were looking for counter attacks with long passes, hoping for a breakaway, but were allowed very few of those opportunities.

“Sometimes it’s not the prettiest goals, but the goals that get in back of the net.” Harlingen South coach Debra Galvan said. “That was just a goal by a one of the players who had that hunger, was first to the ball and got it in. We were kind of off on our game today and this gives us an lot to build up on the prepare for.

“I think it’s good for a team to always have a challenge and get it sooner than later, “Galvan said. “Especially because that builds us up for the rest of the season because this district is not easy – you never know what’s gong to happen from game to game.”

Harlingen South returns to action at 7:30 p.m. at home Friday against Donna North while Edcouch-Elsa travels to Brownsville Porter.

Sharyland Pioneer holds off McAllen Memorial, 13-1 in District 31-5A

MISSION — McAllen Memorial had a chance to force overtime with a catch-and-shoot opportunity against Sharyland Pioneer but could not come up with the cleanest look, and the Diamondbacks remained in first place in District 31-5A with a 41-38 win Tuesday night at home.

The Mustangs came into the night on a five-game win streak and were hoping to improve on their fourth-place seeding with only a handful of games left. McAllen Memorial pushed Sharyland Pioneer after going down early to create a tense finish.

“We held our composure,” Sharyland Pioneer head coach Nicole Villarreal-Sandoval said. “We did what we needed to do to secure the ‘W.’”

Sharyland Pioneer and McAllen Memorial entered the fourth quarter tied at 29. It was the Diamondbacks who hit the important shots early in the quarter to build a six-point lead.

Diamondbacks junior point guard Kassandra Garcia started the quarter with a 3-pointer.

“It felt really good. We actually needed it to put us in the lead because they were catching up and they came at us wanting to ruin our No. 1 spot, and we came back as much as we could,” said Garcia, who had a team-high 13 points.

Valarie Vela, who hit the next 3-pointer to give the Diamondbacks a 35-29 lead, finished with nine points, and center Anika Fleischmann scored eight.

Fleischmann also scored a pivotal fourth-quarter bucket and was up and down the court offensively and defensively, making plays for the Diamondbacks.

“My coaches always tell me to be more aggressive on offense, but I don’t like hitting people,” Fleischmann said. “Tonight, I really tried to work on that specifically.”

Villarreal-Sandoval praised Fleischmann as well as Vela, Garcia and freshman Ebonie Chatman.

Chatman, the Diamondbacks’ leading scorer so far this season, was “face-guarded,” Villarreal-Sandoval said. Chatman finished with three points, but had a bucket in the fourth.

“She is learning as a freshman to try and find other ways to be part of the team, and I think it is going to make her better in the long run because she is a learner of the game,” Villarreal-Sandoval.

McAllen Memorial was down 17-6 after the first quarter but chipped away at the lead with tight defense and a game-high 15 points from point guard Madison Borjas.

The Mustangs picked up six points from Ann Mabadeje, Eva Villarreal and Karly Bazan to complement Borjas’ 15 points.

The loss for the Mustangs all but seals their fate in playoff seeding. McAllen Memorial needed a win and a McAllen Rowe loss, which happened, to move a game behind the Warriors with four games and a meeting coming up between the two.

The gap stays two games between the fourth-seeded McAllen Memorial and third-seeded McAllen Rowe, but the Warriors do have their more challenging final four games.

Sharyland Pioneer is still in first in District 31-5A with a 13-1 record but is only a game up on Edinburg Vela, 12-2, after the SaberCats defeated the Warriors 45-33 on Tuesday night.

Vela and Pioneer are scheduled to meet Feb. 2.

“We are still going to have to fight every day to keep the top spot,” Villarreal-Sandoval said. “It is maintaining our focus throughout our practices and keeping our goal in mind. The girls really want the district championship and finishing top of the district, a very tough district at that. So, we can’t sleep on anybody.”
