These Valley businesses and agencies are holding back to school giveaways

As summer comes to an end, well summer break not so much the heat, and students prepare to tackle the next school year, local businesses, organizations and agencies are pitching in by holding back to school events for families struggling to afford supplies, clothes and anything else necessary for the classroom.

Here’s a list of back to school bashes near you, where free school supplies and other assistance will be provided throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 9

Fadez n’ Bladez Barber Shop will be providing free haircuts to children 15 years old and under as they get ready for their first day of school.

The shop, which is located at 1102 S. 77 Sunshine Strip in Harlingen, will be hosting the free haircuts through 3 p.m. Wednesday as walk-ins only.

Not only will they be providing free haircuts but will also have free food and school supplies while supplies last.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office will also be hosting its annual back to school supplies giveaway beginning at 6 p.m.

The giveaway will be held at the Aurora Valley Park, located at 11300 Bella Vista Drive in Donna.

Throughout the giveaway, the first 1,500 children will be receiving free school supplies while supplies last.

FRIDAY, AUG. 11

DHR Health will be hosting a Back to School Bash at Sunrise Mall, which is located at 2370 Frontage Road in Brownsville, on Friday.

The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the mall’s center court near the Luby’s entrance.

Throughout the event Tip of Texas Outreach will be giving away free school supplies while supplies last and providing information about the agency.

Missy’s Modeling Studio will also be present to provide skin care tips and insight from T-Mobile on wearable tech.

The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its annual Back to School Supply Drive on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The drive will be held at the Harlingen Sports Complex which is located at 3139 Wilson Road in Harlingen.

Children must be present at the event to receive supplies while they last.

Rising prices on accessories this year

THURSDAY, AUG. 17

The Raymondville Police Department will be hosting its National Night Out event where they will also be providing free school supplies while available.

The event will be held Thursday, Aug. 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Park, located at 901 W. Durango Ave. in Raymondville.

SATURDAY, AUG. 19

La Plaza Mall will be hosting a Back-to-School Bash where the first 750 kids to arrive will be receiving a free backpack filled with school supplies.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the mall’s grand court. The mall is located at 2200 S. 10th St. in McAllen.

Not only will kids receive free supplies but will also have an opportunity to check out the latest fashion trends during the back-to-school fashion.

The city of McAllen will be hosting a Back to School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Palm View Branch Library.

The event will kick off at 11 a.m. at the library, which is located at 3401 Jordan Road in McAllen.

Kids must bring their own backpacks in order to receive school supplies while they last, as well as other items such as hygiene essentials.

Throughout the event, kids can also get a haircut, a finger painting kit, health information, safety guidance, enter a raffle and participate in other activities.

Walmart will be hosting a Wellness Day on Saturday, Aug. 19 at locations across the Valley, where families can receive free health screenings and affordable immunizations. 

Walmart Pharmacies nationwide will be participating in the wellness event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Throughout the event, residents can receive screenings for glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index and vision screenings. 

Immunizations include flu, COVID-19, HPV, pneumonia, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), varicella (chickenpox/shingles), whooping cough (TDAP), Hep A & B and other conditions.
