WESLACO — Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday that he is directing the Texas Department of Public Safety to enhance commercial vehicle inspections at the border, though it will likely lead to slower incoming Mexican traffic.

The National Guard will begin to practice for mass migration events, including possible riots, as soon as Thursday.

Abbott said they are also going to provide the option to McAllen and other cities where migrants are released to move migrants from those communities to Washington D.C.

The first stop would be at the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

The announcement comes in the wake of President Joe Biden’s announcement that the administration would be phasing out Title 42, which was put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention implemented the policy during the height of the pandemic.

Abbott said there will be more announced next week.

The Texas governor is one of many who argue that the end of Title 42 will lead to a surge in migration. Abbott is also a frequent critic of Biden’s handling of immigration matters.

This is a developing story.
