Letters: Hiring terms draw comment

In the March 13 Monitor, we read about the ludicrous situations of hiring and firing in our local governments in America! Here in the Valley, people are hired to fill jobs with contracts containing loopholes stipulating terms of employment. These loopholes are costing taxpayers billions of dollars throughout America just to terminate someone, even if it is of a political nature!

Why not do away with those hideous contracts and have a simple hiring and firing agreement saying that if for some reason we can’t work together, then you’re out the door and no further benefits or payroll?

There will be some hesitation from both sides in filling those jobs, but in the long run taxpayers will benefit. What has happened to the work ethic in America? What has happened to the morality of employers in America?

In my long life of working for and being an employer, we didn’t operate under the assumption that I was due compensation for not doing the job.

Trump

support

I recently read a letter from one of your readers who said he did not know of anything “good” that President Trump accomplished while in office. In my opinion he did many excellent things, among them:

1. Border security was excellent (contrast to present “open borders” policy”).

2. Economy was booming — until COVID-19 (contrast to present problems).

3. Energy independence (contrast to watching Mr. Biden beg Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia and Venezuela to increase production as he has shut ours down).

4. Low inflation for four years — less than 2% (compare to today’s 8% plus — highest in 40 years).

5. No new wars (compare to Russia-Ukraine and stirrings in North Korea, Iran and China).

6. Strong military focused on effectiveness in destroying enemy combatants (compare to white rage, gender, transgender promotion and other “politically correct” focus).

7. Keeping terrorists at bay (compare to “surrendering” $85 billion in U.S. arms to the Taliban in Afghanistan, effectively making them the best-armed terrorists on the planet).

8. Keeping nuclear weapons out of Iran (compare to accelerating access today).

9. Having pride in America and its exceptional history of realizing of human potential under God (compare to apologizing for our history and strength).

10. Massive deregulation, freeing up American ingenuity and business potential (compare to today’s lockdowns, increased regulation and anti-business — “profit is greed” attitudes).

11. Substantial playing field leveling in terms of trade. Trump added tariffs — which I am generally opposed to — to garner massive trade imbalance corrections (compare to today’s complete ambivalence to “fairness” in trade).

12. Communicating with “adversaries” (compare with today’s hiding from, or worse, prodding them and then hiding).

13. Price of gasoline under two bucks (compare to gas price near $4 bucks today).

14. Commitment to law enforcement (contrast to defund the police).

15. Leading from in front, with confidence and clarity.

There are many more, but this brief list will hopefully be useful for your letter writer who did not know how people like myself could be supportive of Mr. Trump.
