EDITORIAL: Autos getting safer, but walker-cyclist fatalities still rising

Our nation’s automobiles are safer than ever. Most new vehicles have features to reduce the chance of accidents, including cameras that enable drivers to see what’s behind or beside them and sensors that sound when the vehicle nears a person or object. Many automatically brake if a driver gets too close.

COMMENTARY: Better immigration policy is possible and needed

Americans have been waiting for “comprehensive immigration reform” since 1986, when President Reagan granted amnesty to many illegal immigrants in the country — roughly 3 million at the time — in exchange for lawmakers’ promises to secure the border.

LETTERS: Change wanted, Inflation causes

Let’s cut to the chase and give credit where credit is due! Both the Democrats and Republicans are at fault for our current situation with immigration and more importantly, our economy!

COMMENTARY: Stopping lawsuit abuse

Frivolous lawsuits have real costs and consequences. Undeserving and abusive lawsuits can come for anyone, and the consequences directly hurt employees, consumers and local economies.

EDITORIAL: Officials bicker over buses, little regard given migrants

This past weekend the 20th busload filled with immigrants arrived in Los Angeles, sent from Texas, whose name ironically means “friendship.” Like many of those that went before, the bus that arrived Saturday originated in the Rio Grande Valley.

LETTERS: Addressing Alzheimer’s, Keep teachers unaccountable

At a time when more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, including 400,000 in Texas, prioritizing how this devastating disease is addressed remains a critical issue for our country.

COMMENTARY: Addressing police brutality and human insanity

In the wake of police and citizens’ violence in Ohio, New York, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Maryland, Minnesota, Tennessee and, most recently, Philadelphia, many people are asking: Why repeat actions long proven to be unsuccessful with the hope of a more desirable outcome, even though we are aware that it is futile?

COMMENTARY: Better animal shelter needed

If there’s one thing that gets people more fired up than raising their taxes, it’s bullies messing with animals. Our animals are to be loved, cherished and cared for. We show them compassion, and they provide us comfort. We feed all those neighborhood cats even when we know we shouldn’t. Our critters are our best friends, our companions and an integral part of our families lives.

COMMENTARY: Constitutional propositions on state ballot evaluated

These are opinions on the propositions on the November ballot from an 80-year-old Independent voter who tries his best to march to the tunes of truth, logic, the Ten Commandments and the Constitution.

LETTERS: Uncertainty over election, Infrastructure for warehouses

This is my opinion in the 2024 election. I do not see anyone qualified to head America forward; we continue to sink instead of working on moving forward and out of this ever-sinking quagmire we find ourselves in.
