Police: Combes man arrested after struggling with officer

COMBES — An early morning traffic stop over the weekend led to the arrest of Emmanuel Munoz, 33, of Combes, after a struggle with a police officer, according to police.

According to a press release from the Combes Police Department, an officer noticed a car with an obscured license plate traveling north on Business 77 in Combes Saturday at about 2:30 a.m.

The officer initiated a traffic stop, and the car came to a stop on Rio Rancho Road west of Armadillo Street.

The driver, Munoz, appeared to be intoxicated, according to the press release.

When Munoz refused to exit his car, a struggle ensued between Munoz and the officer, according to police.

As the officer tried to remove Munoz from his car, he started the car’s engine and drove off from the traffic stop, nearly striking the officer, according to the press release.

The officer followed Munoz to his house and was able to stop Munoz from entering it, police said.

Police said att that time, Munoz became violent.

As Munoz resisted the arrest, a second officer arrived and helped with the arrest, according to police.

Munoz was charged with driving while intoxicated 2nd offense, assault of a public servant, resisting arrest, and evading arrest with a vehicle, police said.

Munoz was transported to the Cameron County Jail, where he is awaiting arraignment.
