Authorities: Man tried to smuggle $300,000 into Mexico

Federal authorities arrested a Brownsville man last week after he was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle over $300,000 into Mexico via the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge.

A criminal complaint filed on Tuesday stated that Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended Carlos Alberto Guevara, the driver of a Dodge Durango, alongside his underage son on May 22 following an inspection of the vehicle.

Guevara was headed to Mexico and gave a negative declaration of monetary instruments in excess of $10,000, according to the document.

Officers conducting an outbound inspection discovered multiple packages wrapped in silver and black tape within a duffle bag hidden under the rear seat, wrote the special agent who interviewed Guevara.

According to the complaint, the packages contained a total of approximately $303,601 in U.S. currency.
