HARLINGEN — Two hundred backpacks were ready to be distributed to children in need and affected by the flooding in June, thanks to community leaders.
The backpacks as well as school supplies were gifted to children at Sun Loan on Ed Carey Drive yesterday afternoon.
Noemi Cisneros joined forces with Sun Loan company members as well as Cristina Palomo from State Farm, and in two days they created a community event to support those in need.
“This is something that happened over night and we have amazing individuals that have caring hearts and are willing to give back and we know the need is there. We cannot sit back and do anything about it,” Cisneros said.
“We are here to come together and unite together for our community and thank the Lord, he has a purpose and we welcome anyone else who would like to help later on.”
Not only where supplies provided but free haircuts were available as well.
Rene “Big Moe” Resendez was contacted that morning to see if he could do free haircuts and he accepted right away.
“It is in my heart to give back to the community any way I can. I know I can produce haircuts and if I can do that and make somebody’s day, I am always down to do that. It makes me happy, everyone coming together,” Resendez said.
“It gets pricey and expensive coming back to school so being able to help anyone we can, we will do these back to school cuts, among other events.”
