SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — A boil water notice was issued yesterday on the Island by the Laguna Madre Water District.
Residents and visitors on the Island need to boil and cool water before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing their teeth and washing their hands and face.
The water notice is the result of a pipe that was struck around 3 p.m. Tuesday by a utility company working along the 700 block of Padre Boulevard.
The LMWD shut the water off on the Island for about three hours and finished repairing the broken water line around 8 p.m.
The water district is advising residents and tourists to boil water for two minutes to ensure all harmful bacteria and other microbes are destroyed.
According to a press release from the LMWD, children, seniors and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria and all customers should comply with the boil water notice.
LMWD personnel said the notice could be in effect for days until water tests are complete.
According to Carlos J. Galvan, Laguna Madre Water District General Manager, water sampling takes about 24 hours to complete.
Results are estimated to be complete around 2 p.m. today.
The LMWD will notify customers when the notice is rescinded.
