Another one for the books

HARLINGEN — A festive time filled with books, music, food and games is in store for families visiting the library this week.

The Harlingen Public Library will host a Summer Reading Celebration Friday, July 26, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Attendees will be able to get their picture taken at a photo booth, play games, make arts and crafts, eat cake and receive a free book.

Additionally, attendees will be able to watch a performance by Juan C and the Key Limes.

Harlingen Public Library Assistant Director Molly Walter said the group is going to be “a big highlight of the event.”

“They perform upbeat songs kids can sing and dance along to and I think that’s going to be a really fun part of our summer reading celebration,” she said.

Summer reading

More than 150 children participated in the library’s reading program and recorded the number of books they read throughout the summer.

All participants of the program will receive certificates during the celebration.

From hosting an array of educational presentations, to seeing families checking out books and reading with their kids, Walter said she feels really positive about the community’s response to the Summer Reading Program.

“It’s all about promoting literacy and creating a community that really celebrates reading,” she said. “It’s neat to see families here in the library taking advantage of the programs and resources we have available.”
