Rotary hosting beach run to honor first responders

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — The Port Isabel Rotary Club is hosting a Beach Rescue run and walk in honor of first responders in Port Isabel, Laguna Vista and South Padre Island.

The event will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at Clayton’s Beach Bar on the Island.

Proceeds from the race will go toward the Laguna Madre First Responders Fund. The fund is used to assist local first responders and their families who become injured, seriously ill, or killed in the line of duty.

Additionally, proceeds from the race will go toward recognition awards for heroism and service above self by local first responders, along with other local community service programs.

An all-time record of nearly 5,000 people participated in the 29th annual Longest Causeway Run and Walk on Saturday morning. The race began on Yturria Street in Port Isabel and ended on Laguna Boulevard in front of Louie’s Backyard in the South Padre Island bar district.
