Words to live by

Several years ago, the VMS published an especially-interesting letter written by Mr. Carlos Canas , living in San Benito at that time.

His letter provided 10 thoughtful suggestions toward spending a quality lifetime in our United States, and although I do not have his 10 points for discussion I did keep the last portion of his letter describing some of his lifetime goals.

I am asking the editor to again publish the ending of his letter.

These are some of his thoughts written in the paragraphs to end his letter.

“Let me leave you with this last thought: My son often goes with me when I go singing at retirement communities and he fell in love with “The Impossible Dream” a song from the musical “Man of La Mancha.”

Some of the words of the song are as follows: To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go, To right the unrightable wrong, To try when your arms are too weary, To be willing to give when there’s no more to give, To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live — And I know if I’ll only be true to this glorious quest That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I’m laid to my rest and the world will be better for this, That one man scorned and covered with scars Still strove with his last ounce of courage will reach the unreachable star.”

These words rang true for me more than 40 years ago when I was a young boy and I heard them for the first time, just as they have touched my son’s heart.

These words described to me what being an American is all about, and I have always believed that all of us fortunate enough to be called Americans should strive for these values because when we do, we become the very best that the world has to give.

Carlos R. Canas Thank you Carlos for reminding us of some of our personal obligations to maintain a viable community.

I too share the heart felt message of these words with you and your son.
