Residents in Rio Hondo won’t be happy to know the Texas Department of Transportation is delaying the reopening of the lift bridge until summer.
TxDOT says the contractor found additional items that needed to be repaired on the mechanical lift bridge, which is one of just a few such structures like it still operating in the United States.
TxDOT spokesman Octavio Saenz says they now estimate it will be late June or early July before the bridge is open to traffic.
He says the $12.4 million retrofit is still ahead of the original target of 33 months. The construction project started in Sept. 2016.
The city has been planning a “Bridgefest” festival for April 28 to celebrate the opening.
