Fire chief: Bed-ridden woman dies in blaze

BROWNSVILLE — A bed-ridden woman died in a fire Sunday night, according to authorities.

Brownsville Fire Department Interim Chief Jarrett Sheldon said firefighters responded to a fire at a duplex at 10:55 p.m. Sunday at 18 A Ave., where the woman — who was in her 70s — lived with her husband.

The husband, who is also in his 70s and who used a wheelchair, alerted authorities to the blaze.

“He was home and called 911 and tried to rescue the female and was unable to,” Sheldon said.

The fire was confined to the woman’s room. The cause is still under investigation.

Sheldon said authorities will reveal the identify of the woman after notification of any other existing family members and when the investigation is complete.
