BROWNSVILLE — If you have ever thought about adopting a child but aren’t sure about the process, then you want to attend the 13th annual Heart Gallery of the Rio Grande Valley.
The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Children’s Museum of Brownsville at Dean Porter Park. It is a free event and open to the public.
Portraits of the children and sibling groups up for adoption will be displayed at the museum with bios written by each child, said Mary Curtis, past president of the Rotary Club of Historic Brownsville.
“Even if you haven’t thought about adopting or growing your family that way, come and just be aware of what is going on in your community and the kids and their needs,” Curtis said.
The children, who range in ages from toddlers to teenagers, are from the South Texas area.
The mission of the Heart Gallery is to promote the adoption of children in the state foster care program.
It is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Historic Brownsville, the Children’s Museum of Brownsville and the Department of Family Protective Services.
“We are excited to be able to bring these three agencies together to promote the needs of their special kids. They are special because they have no permanent home and that makes life beyond hard,” Curtis said.
Curtis said representatives from Family Protective Services will be at the event in case anyone has questions about a adopting a child or sibling group.
“These are kids that have been in the system long enough that some social worker said, ‘Look, maybe we can get you adopted this way’,”Curtis said.
About 100 people attended last year’s event and organizers hope that many or even more will attend this year event.
