HARLINGEN — Harlingen teachers are looking forward to a new school year with new faces and fresh possibilities — and a little more in their wallet.
The Harlingen school board has approved a $1,200 raise for its school teachers, along with a 2.5 percent increase for administrators — principals, assistant principals, etc. Hourly employees are getting a 3 percent raise.
Teachers were happy to hear the news.
“I certainly appreciate the pay raise and feel grateful that our district continues to recognize how important educators area,” said Beatrice Cruz, who teaches fifth grade at Zavala Elementary.
“I enjoy being able to be a positive role model,” she said.
Todd Cash teaches agriculture science at Harlingen High School. He appreciates the opportunity to help students achieve their potential.
“I enjoy being able to interact with and watch students grow, to have the opportunity to see some students who didn’t think they had much of an opportunity in life,” Cash said. “Once I’m able to introduce them to some new activities and help open the door for them, I’m able to see the response and see them go forward.”
That’s his first joy. Being rewarded financially is an added benefit.
“It’s great that we’re able to get an increase in pay to help cover our living expenses,” he said.
Superintendent Art Cavazos thanked the Harlingen school district for granting the increase.
“I commend our trustees for unanimously approving a salary increase for our HCISD teachers that play a critical role in our success and are committed to educational excellence,” Cavazos said.
