Lack of arts categories disappointing

As a musician, music venue owner, and appreciator of the arts more broadly, I was disappointed in the limited number and scope of arts-related categories on the 2017 Reader’s Choice Award ballot.

Of the 133 categories, only two (Local Band and Photographer) were tied to the arts.

Harlingen’s thriving art scene is a major asset to the community.

People come from across and even beyond the Valley to enjoy Harlingen’s art openings, live music performances, arts-related classes, and Art Night (which occurs in Downtown Harlingen the last Friday of every month).

Adding new categories to the Readers Choice ballot that reflect the breadth of Harlingen’s art offerings would both reinforce the image of our city as an arts destination — which is great for business. — and provide residents the opportunity to recognize organizations that improve their quality of life through the arts.
