New blood in charge of SBCISD board

SAN BENITO — As of last week, there is a new school board president.

After the newly-elected San Benito School Board of Education trustees were sworn in, they voted to re-organize the school board.

This resulted in a complete transition.

Trustees voted unanimously and without hesitation to name Michael Vargas president of the school board.

Angel Mendez is now the vice president and Mary Lous Garcia is secretary.

Vargas is one of the youngest members to serve as president.

He is ready for the challenge.

He expressed his gratitude and willingness to get to work on his Facebook page.

“I do not take this responsibility lightly because I understand the great work that is ahead of us,” Vargas said. “It is also an emotional moment for me, as a student born out of one of the poorest neighborhoods in our community able to aspire to this leadership role.”

New additions to the board include, trustee place four Orlando Lopez, trustee place five Garcia and trustee place six Victor Rosas.

Mendez was re-elected to place seven.

The others, Anna Cruz, Joe G. González, Lopez and Rosas will serve as trustees.

Those no longer on the board are Arnold Padilla, Oscar Medrano and Hector Leal.

Together they had more than 25 years of service to the board.
