Heavy swells prompt small-craft advisory

HARLINGEN — Small-craft advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service for the Laguna Madre and gulf.

Forecasters also warn of a high risk of rip currents today on South Padre Island beaches and at Boca Chica State Park.

Weather forecasters in Brownsville say swells of five to seven feet will create dangerous conditions for small craft today in the gulf. Winds of up to 23 mph will create choppy conditions in the bay as well.

The advisories cover the area from the Port of Brownsville to Baffin Bay.

They will remain in effect until 8 p.m.
