County: Algae found at Isla Blanca beach

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Cameron County Parks Director Joe Vega has confirmed a Blue Green algae was found today in the water near Isla Blanca Park.

Vega said the algae was not a danger to the public health.

“Upon arriving on the scene, public safety personnel asked swimmers to leave the water as a preventative measure,” said South Padre Island Mayor Barry Patel. “A sample was taken to the UTRGV Coastal studies lab where it was identified as Blue-Green Algae, which is not harmful to humans.”

The beach was temporarily closed as a precaution, but it has since been reopened.
