Mercedes native receives hefty sentence for transporting cocaine

Martin Perez, who pleaded guilty March 31 for possessing with the intent to distribute approximately 84 kilograms cocaine, was sentenced to 262 months in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release, according to a news release from acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez.

Perez, who is from Mercedes, also has prior conviction of possessing with the intent to distribute marijuana in 2005 along with a prior aggravated assault conviction, the release states.

On Feb. 1, 2016, Perez was driving a tractor-trailer in Kleberg County when he was stopped for a traffic violation, according to the news release. A search of the trailer resulted in the discovery of approximately 84 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a compartment in the bed of the trailer, the release states.
