100-year-old woman dies in auto/pedestrian accident

WESLACO — Law enforcement authorities here are investigating the circumstances that led a 100-year-old woman onto East Interstate 2, where she was struck and killed early yesterday morning in an auto-pedestrian accident.

The victim, identified as Guadalupe Cervantes, was reportedly walking on the 500 block of the expressway sometime before 4:15 a.m. yesterday when she was struck by a semi-truck, according to Officer Erik Hernandez, a spokesperson for the Weslaco Police Department.

Hernandez issued a statement saying Cervantes died as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident. It was also confirmed the driver of the vehicle involved, who stopped to render aid, is not facing any criminal charges.

The investigation into how Cervantes ended up on the expressway remains ongoing. Hernandez did, however, note that Cervantes lived in the area where the accident occurred.

“We’re just not too sure (how Cervantes made it to the Expressway),” Hernandez said. “That’s what we’re trying to find out — if she unfortunately exited her home not knowing where she was going. Nothing is official yet, and the investigators are still looking into it.”
