Power of persuasion: Speech, debate team takes top honors

HARLINGEN — Should private emails hurt Hillary Clinton’s campaign?

Grant Burbach, a junior at Harlingen High School, doesn’t think so, and he said as much Saturday at a speech, drama and debate tournament in Pharr-San Juan-Alamo.

“The reason is that three senators had private email accounts,” said Grant, 16, who took first place in domestic extemporaneous speaking.

He and six other students in Vanessa Alaniz’s Speech, Drama and Debate Team at HHS performed well last weekend. The event, the PSJA Texas Forensics Association Tournament, featured contestants from 30 schools.

Four students took first place in various events; one was named top speaker. One student who is brand new to the world of speech and drama was only there to observe. He ended up competing at the last minute and took eighth place.

“It’s to be expected because they are leaders and they are amazing,” said Alaniz, speech, drama and debate instructor and coach. This is Alaniz’s first year of teaching. She takes the reins of the program begun by her friend Tasha Kneis, who is starting a new program at Tuloso-Midway near Corpus Christi.

Alaniz is overjoyed by her students’ success.

“This is just the beginning,” she said. “It’s really amazing to see the relationships they are building. We’ve got veterans qualifying for state. We had Max, the very first time competing, about to get eighth place.”
