La Feria job fair open to the public

LA FERIA — Job seekers may be able to line up employment for future paydays at the La Feria Job Fair taking place tomorrow.

“The good thing about this job fair is that it offers a wide range of businesses and positions,” said Andi Atkinson, job fair coordinator. “People of all ages and education levels attend because it offers job prospects for nearly everyone.”

There is no regristrastration fee, and there is absolutely no charge to attend the job fair.

The job fair will take place at the United Methodist church of La Feria located next to Tiny Town Park and across from the La Feria public library.

Job seekers who do not have transportation can ride the Valley Metro bus to La Feria for free that day.

Riders should call Valley Metro at 1-800-574-8322 for the closet bus stop and schedule. Free child care also will be provided for job seekers with children.

Atkinson said the La Feria Job Fair has been well received in the past two years, with 300 to 350 people in attendance.

“It comes at a good time. Many people are looking for a job or even a second job so they can have extra money for the holidays,” Atkinson said.

Anyone looking for a full-time, part-time or seasonal line of work will have an opportunity to meet employers, hand out resumes and get interviewed on the spot.

More than 20 employers will be in attendance offering job opportunities.

“It works so well because people can meet the employers right then and there, and fill out an application on the spot,” Atkinson said.

Workforce Solutions will have computers at the job fair for applicants to apply online.

Atkinson said the job fair was created by the United Methodist church to help the people the church was giving food to.

“We are happy to give them food but does that really solve the problem?” Atkinson said. “We thought the best way to help them earn a living was to help them find a job.”

She said the Methodist Church is all about service and the reason it started the job fair was because it is very good at helping people in the community.

“I think all churches really want to help their community,” Atkinson said. “God didn’t ask us to help our brother, he asked us to take care of our brother.”
