Police identify man killed in street sweeper accident

SAN BENITO — Police have identified the Brownsville man who was killed Monday when he struck a street sweeper on the shoulder of the expressway.

Jason Garcia, 29, died after the red Toyota Tundra pickup he was driving ran into the back of a street sweeper on the 3500 block of West Expressway 83.

Police say Garcia collided with a GMC C7500 traffic control truck which was in the shoulder lane providing traffic control for the street sweeping crew up ahead.

Garcia’s pickup struck the rear bumper of the GMC and then crashed into a Toyota Corolla sending that driver to the hospital with a head injury.

Police said Garcia was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead on scene by Justice of the Peace Guadalupe Ayala.

Traffic was backed up on the expressway for hours and diverted to the frontage road until just before 5 p.m.

San Benito police today are urging all drivers to use caution when driving on the highway.

“Please heed all the warnings signs and give the right of way to all highway workers and Tex-Dot employees,” police said.

Friends of Facebook say Garcia was the father of two boys and a natural born leader.
