HARLINGEN — The annual migration of Winter Texans is headed to the Rio Grande Valley.
Each year, around 100,000 seasonal residents arrive, and although those numbers are down nearly 50,000 from a high in 2009-2010, Winter Texans remain a crucial component of the Valley’s economic base.
In 2015-16, the estimated economic impact of the visitors was $760 million, according to a study conducted every other year by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship.
But this year, much like last, there are concerns about whether Canadians will make a robust appearance in numbers.
Canadians make up 17.6 percent of Winter Texans and, like last year, are taking a hit on the Canadian-U.S. dollar exchange rate.
