HARLINGEN — A recently signed 50-year, no-cost lease deal on Adolph Thomae Jr. County Park could unravel over the county’s inability to provide adequate security there.
The popular park and boat launch is within the perimeter of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. Pointing to terms of the lease with the county, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials say the park needs to be managed better to meet the county’s obligations.
“Two things can happen — the Fish and Wildlife Service can back out of the agreement, or edit the agreement to provide for changes in the way things need to be managed — two things we would prefer not to do,” said refuge manager Boyd Blihovde.
“We are currently looking into private concession options that may be able to help the county manage some of the safety issues at the park,” he added.
The problems at the park are primarily the result of its popularity.
