San Benito street bridge closed due to erosion

SAN BENITO – City officials Thursday closed a small bridge on Rio Grande Street as a precautionary measure to prevent possible accidents after an inspection revealed structural concerns.

The bridge support suffered from erosion issues, said Interim City Manager Art Rodriguez said.

A more formal evaluation was scheduled to be conducted by an engineer today.

Barricades have been placed along the roadway to prevent motorists from crossing the bridge.

Rio Grande Street is located south of McCullough Street and Expressway 77/83.

Officials encourage all to respect those barricades or face prosecution and fines if moved.
