Residents being turned away from tax office annex

HARLINGEN — Citizens wanting to handle regular business at the Cameron County Tax Assessor’s Office for vehicle registration and license plate tags are being sent off.

They are being told to come back next week or to go online to register their vehicles.

Drivers with expired tags are left in the cold.

Wendy Garcia, sitting in her car outside the county annex on Wilson Road in Harlingen, was upset that a regular transaction with the county wasn’t possible for her today.

“I need the sticker to be able to drive my car and I couldn’t get that today,” said Garcia, 25, as she sat in her car wondering what to do next.

Garcia and others who visited the office were unaware of the recent arrests and raid at the tax office in Brownsville.
