The UTRGV baseball team has secured a spot at the Western Athletic Baseball Tournament, set for May 25-28 at HohokamStadium in Mesa, AZ.

With three wins against Sam Houston this weekend during the Vaqueros’ final home series of the season, UTRGV (29-20, 14-10)could propel itself into first place in the WAC’s Southwest Division standings.

“We sweep ‘em in here, we got the tiebreaker, we’re in first place. We control getting first,” UTRGV head coach Derek Matlocksaid.

The action begins with Game 1 at 7 p.m. today at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg. Game 2 is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday,with the Vaqueros’ home finale slated for noon Sunday.

Sam Houston sits in first in WAC’s Southwest Division with a 17-7 conference record. The Vaqueros are tied for second withLamar at 14-10. A UTRGV sweep at home this weekend creates a tie atop the division with one WAC series remaining before theconference tournament.

When the two played April 1-3 in Huntsville for their first three-game series of the season, UTRGV took two out of three withwins of 10-4 and 13-6.

UTRGV is also running three promotions during its final home series. Friday’sgame, tabbed Community Heroes Night, offers free admission to the game to frontlineworkers, first responders and teachers.
