UTRGV baseball to host Baylor for three-game series

UTRGV announced on Saturday that the baseball team will host Baylor, a team receiving votes in Collegiate Baseball‘s preseason poll, for a doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m. and a single game on Monday at 1 p.m.

Additionally, the men’s basketball game against Dallas Christian, originally scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m., will now start at 7 p.m.

The baseball team was originally scheduled to host Lamar for three games this weekend, but those games were canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests of Tier 1 personnel and subsequent contact tracing within the Lamar baseball program.

Additionally, the baseball team was originally scheduled to visit Baylor Monday at 4 p.m. Baylor had its season-opening weekend series against Jacksonville State canceled due to Winter Storm Uri.

The game will be played with attendance limited only to families of the student-athletes and coaches on the team pass lists. Concession stands will not be open as UTRGV Athletics does not want to try resupplying the concessions stands during a time at which members of the community are trying to fill their own pantries.

Should the second game on Sunday not be complete by the time it is necessary to turn on the stadium lights, the game will be suspended and completed prior to Monday’s scheduled game. UTRGV Athletics is committed to not turning on the lights at UTRGV Baseball Stadium due to the need to conserve energy across the State of Texas.
