UTRGV baseball takes doubleheader against Dixie State

The UTRGV baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Dixie State Trailblazers with an 18-1 victory in seven innings in Game 2 on Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah.

The Vaqueros (11-8, 4-3 WAC) won Game 1 13-3.

Junior Edinburg Vela alum RJ Ochoa hit his first-career home run as part of a 3-for-5, two-RBI, two-run game.

Ochoa started the third inning with a solo shot off of Ben Hart (0-3) and capped the inning with an RBI single. In between, junior Freddy Rojas Jr. homered for the third straight game, hitting his second career grand slam, and graduate student Elijah Alexander hit an RBI single.

Junior Angel De La Cruz added an RBI single during the fourth and then graduate student Andy Atwood came up with an RBI single during the fifth to put the Vaqueros up 9-1.

The Vaqueros plated nine more runs during the seventh on a two-run double by graduate student Conrado Diaz, a two-run single by De La Cruz, an RBI double by senior Jacob Hirsh, a two-run single by junior Darian Luper and a two-run home run by freshman Spencer Serven.

Postbaccalaureate student Christian Sepulveda posted his second straight three-hit game, stealing a base and scoring twice. Luper, De La Cruz, Diaz and graduate student Coleman Grubbs all finished with two hits. Diaz scored three times. Luper, De la Cruz and Grubbs all scored twice each. The Vaqueros finished with 20 hits.

That made a winner of sophomore Colten Davis (4-0), who pitched a career-high 6.0 innings, striking out five while allowing one run on four hits and two walks.

The Trailblazers (3-12, 2-5 WAC) scored their run during the first on a home run by Hank Dodson.
