South Padre Island City Council approved upgrades to audio and video equipment used to live-stream, record and archive council and committee meetings.

According to a press release from the city, the video system malfunctioned in January and has not been reliable since.

“While recording meetings is not a state requirement, the city has implemented live-streaming and archiving the meetings since 2008,” the press release states.

As an alternative source, officials stated that the city has been utilizing Google Meets to allow public participation during meetings.

According to the press release, new upgrades should be completed by May.

City officials said the upgrades should resolve the current equipment issues that they are experiencing.

“Apologies for the inconvenience this has caused,” SPI City Manager Randy Smith stated.
