The PSJA High Bears joined a group of four Rio Grande Valley high school softball teams to earn statewide rankings in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 6A poll

The PSJA High Bears joined a group of four Class 6A Rio Grande Valley high school softball teams that earned statewide rankings in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

PSJA High (5-0) makes its debut in the TGCA softball poll at 11th overall statewide in Class 6A.

The Bears have left their mark as one of the most explosive offenses across South Texas in the opening weeks of the season.

PSJA High has clobbered a majority of its opponents in dominant wins over Edinburg Economedes, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, McAllen Rowe and Sharyland High, while also earning a close victory over Harlingen High.

The Bears have scored 76 runs in five games and are outscoring their opponents by an average of 13 runs per game. PSJA High returns to action this week for a pair of District 31-6A games at Mission High at 7 p.m. Tuesday and at home against Edinburg Vela at 7 p.m. Friday.

Harlingen South (7-0-1) continued to rise in the TGCA poll for the second consecutive week and clocked in at fifth overall in this week’s TGCA Class 6A poll, the highest statewide ranking for any Rio Grande Valley team at any classification level this season.

The Hawks rolled to three wins in the last eight days, including a 7-1 non-district victory over Edcouch-Elsa and a pair of big District 32-6A wins over Donna North and crosstown rival Harlingen in Game 1 of the Bird Bowl.

Harlingen South returns to the diamond to host Weslaco High in another 32-6A clash at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Los Fresnos (7-0), meanwhile, climbed the farthest of any RGV squad in this week’s TGCA Class 6A poll, moving from No. 16 to No. 10 in the state.

The Falcons picked up four wins during the last seven days, including a pair of District 32-6A victories and two dominant non-district wins.

Los Fresnos beat 32-6A rivals Brownsville Hanna and Brownsville Rivera by a combined score of 36-0 and defeated Brownsville Veterans and Lyford during a Saturday doubleheader.

The Falcons play their next game against 32-6A foe San Benito at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Los Fresnos.

Edinburg North (6-1) fell four spots to 24th in the latest 6A rankings.

The Cougars lost their first game of the season to crosstown rival Edinburg Vela, but rebounded with weekend wins over Zapata and Laredo United, defeating the Longhorns with a game-winning walk.

Edinburg North will play three games this week beginning with a road game against PSJA North at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by another District 31-6A game at home against La Joya High at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Cougars will culminate the week with a non-district contest at home against Weslaco East at 1 p.m. Saturday.
