The UTRGV baseball team won its fourth straight game by defeating the Abilene Christian Wildcats 6-4 on Friday at CrutcherScott Field in Abilene.
Center fielder Brett Cain led the Vaqueros (22-15, 8-8 WAC) offensively by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Duringthe past five games, Cain is hitting .700 (14-for-20) with five RBIs and seven runs scored. Sophomore PSJA High alum Jacob Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Designated hitter Cameron Blake finished 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored.
The Vaqueros led 2-0 on a Cain sacrifice fly and a Sanchez RBI single during the first against Tyler Morgan (4-2).
After the Wildcats (18-19, 7-9 WAC) scored four runs during the second on a Grayson Tatrow two-run double and a Tanner Tweedt two-run single, senior Kevin Stevens (5-2) settled down to retire nine of the last 10 batters he faced. Stevens pitched five innings, striking out six.
The Vaqueros took the lead with four runs during the sixth. With runners at second and third and one out, a passed ball brought home Cain. Right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. followed with a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, to give the Vaqueros the lead. One out later, freshman Edinburg Vela alum Isaac Lopez walked, stole second and scored on a Blake RBI single.
Senior Ricky Gerik Jr. took over from there, pitching four scoreless innings, striking out five, for his fifth save.
UTRGV and Abilene Christian play a doubleheader beginning at 1 today.
