SAN BENITO — “Once a Greyhound, always a Greyhound,” is a saying at San Benito. For Homer Quiroz, the adage will ring true into his collegiate career.

The senior defensive back chose to remain a Greyhound at the next level, signing his National Letter of Intent to play football for the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds on Thursday in front of coaches, family and friends at the San Benito Gym.

The speedy defensive back joins ENMU after a two-year career as a starter for San Benito, appearing in 24 total contests.

He recorded his best season as a senior, tallying 87 total tackles, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception, earning him Valley Morning Star All-Star second-team defense honors.

Quiroz also made his impact felt on special teams, returning one kick for a touchdown and earning District 32-6A first-team return specialist honors.

He finished his career with 140 total tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions and nine pass deflections according to his MaxPreps profile.

Quiroz is a part of former Brownsville Veterans head coach Kelley Lee’s first recruiting class in his return to ENMU. The 44-athlete class features several Valley athletes, with Quiroz marking the fourth RGV native to join the Greyhounds.

He’ll play alongside Brownsville Veterans’ Bryan Chavez, Brownsville Hanna’s Kriz Pena and La Feria’s Justin Rodriguez next fall.

Lee, who witnessed Quiroz’s impact firsthand during Brownsville Veterans’ 17-3 loss to San Benito this past season, praised the defensive back for his athleticism. Quiroz finished that game with 10 total tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

“Homer has speed to burn, and has played both safety and corner,” Lee said in a Twitter post Feb. 1. “We think he will be a great addition to our secondary.”
