Helpful family
While doing my usual rushed grocery shopping at H-E-B, I came across the kindest people, a young mom and her son, presumably around 13 or so, who both came with a big smile on their faces, to help me unload my cart of groceries at the checkout registry. They probably noticed my frail attempt to do it on my own, and both came to my rescue.
After helping me, the mom went back to tend to her own cart, and this young man unloaded the last item in my cart with an angelic smile. When he was done I was so touched by this God-sent young man, I couldn’t help but blurt out to him, “We’re in good hands, you’re part of America’s next great generation.” He gave me a big, confused smile and left to join his mom.
While unloading my groceries into the car trunk, this young man and his mom appeared again like angels to help me unload my groceries into the car trunk. I could see the dad waiting patiently in their car.
This kind mom quickly explained to me that she was teaching her son, who’s experiencing learning disabilities, the ways to overcome obstacles by concentrating on being of service to other people facing life’s hurdles too.
I was incredibly impressed by this strong mom teaching her son the right way to overcome disabilities, by ignoring cruelty from people and classmates looking down at him for his disabilities. If anybody deserves awards and recognition in this chaotic life, it’s people like this mom, dad and son, who live by example. It is their determination to be proud of their son, and by teaching him what’s important, they’re making sure that their son will become a future, much-needed, leader and inspiration to his peers in this shallow place we call world.

Sentence criticized
It took some time to get over the shock of the story about the Uribe family. I can only imagine the gasps in the courtroom as Angela Mia Villarreal received four months in jail and 10 years probation.
According to the article she was doing 111mph down McAllen’s 10th Street and was over double the legal limit after her night of drinking when she hit and killed Agustin Molina Uribe. What a miscarriage of justice. This stinks to high heaven of good old boys getting their paralegal out of trouble.
How can Judges Fernando Mancias and Rodolfo Gonzalez stand up for this person? How on earth is she now a lawyer? She has violated her probation several times! She’s taken 101 total tests, skipped 15 and been late for 11 and failed on five separate occasions!
This trial and sentence was a total joke. Evidently if you know enough judges you can get away with vehicular homicide.
To add insult to injury, apparently emergency responders were more concerned about a drunk woman than a man burning to death in his vehicle as a result of her actions.
Shame on you, Judge Mario Ramirez, shame on all judges involved. Proving once again that our judicial system is rigged in favor of those in the know. Wow, just wow!

Commentary commended
Louise Butler’s commentary, “Thoughts on Kennewick Man and Columbus Day” on Oct. 10, is outstanding. It is an enjoyable read and quite informative.
