A man illegally present in the country assaulted a female Border Patrol agent early Friday morning after he attempted to conceal himself when agents located a group of people near the Falfurrias checkpoint.

Carlos Trambiz was charged with knowingly forcibly assaulting an employee of the United States while such employee was engaged in the official performance of their duties.

On Friday, at about 5:14 a.m., Falfurrias Border Patrol Station agents were working to locate a group of people illegally present in the U.S. in the area of the Cage Ranch with the assistance of a Small Unmanned Aircraft System.

“BPAs came across the group, announced themselves as BPAs and proceeded to take them into custody,” the complaint said.

As the group was being taken into custody, a SUAS operator advised the agents through radio that another person, later identified as Trambiz, was attempting to conceal themselves within a nearby brush thicket.

Agent Kristyn Higgins advised she would head to the location to find Trambiz.

When Higgins approached Trambiz, she commanded him not to move, but he attempted to get away by turning away.

Higgins then jumped on Trambiz, who continued to refuse to follow commands and give his hands to Higgins.

It was then that Trambiz attempted to throw a punch at Higgins but missed. He then threw his elbow at Higgins, which landed on her face, and continued assaulting her.

“Trambiz grabbed BPA Higgins by the throat as the assault continued,” the complaint said.

Higgins fought back by punching Trambiz in the face as he continued to move around.

She eventually managed to get Trambiz under control, stopped the assault, handcuffed him and secured him in a vehicle.

Higgins then received on-scene medical attention for her nose, which was bleeding.

Trambiz is set to appear Thursday morning before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jason B. Libby for his detention hearing.
