A 19-year-old murder suspect was apprehended Sunday after Customs and Border Protection officers found him concealed in the trunk of his sister’s vehicle after allegedly fleeing to Mexico, according to a news release.

Alberto Sanchez was wanted in connection to the murder of a Santa Rosa teenager on Jan. 26 and was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

“The charges of murder relate back to a report of a teenager being shot multiple times in Santa Rosa,” the release said.

Police identified Jose Torres, Julian Casarez and Alberto Sanchez as suspects in the murder of the teen along with numerous aggravated assaults and aggravated robberies.

Authorities managed to arrest Torres and Casarez, but Sanchez fled to Mexico before he could be taken in.

He was then captured at the Progreso Port of Entry hiding inside the trunk of a vehicle driven by his sister, Jackeline Sanchez, after allegedly fleeing to Mexico.

Jackeline Sanchez admitted to investigators that she was attempting to smuggle her brother back into Texas, according to the release.

In addition to finding Alberto Sanchez, officers found 425 grams of methamphetamines inside a backpack in the trunk.

He was transported to the Cameron County Jail by Santa Rosa police and a Texas Ranger.

“Sanchez will now be held over to answer for his crimes,” the release said.
