With the help of a federal ruling that protects abortion funds, Frontera Fund has announced that it will once again start its operations to assist Texans who wish to get an out-of-state abortion.

The fund will provide financial support for Texans who seek abortions in other states where abortion care is legal. The goal of the fund is to provide financial resources that will ease the struggles of abortion restrictions in the state of Texas.

“By providing funding for out-of-state abortions, we hope to help alleviate this burden and empower individuals to make the best choices for themselves and their families,” Zaena Zamora, executive director of Frontera Fund, said in a news release.

The Supreme Court on June 24, 2022, overturned Roe v. Wade, a longstanding precedent that previously upheld a woman’s right to an abortion.

According to a Frontera Fund news release, the effects of abortion restrictions in the state have negatively impacted the Rio Grande Valley over the last 10 years.

“In our region, the state’s abortion ban has kept uninsured, low-income working people with mixed documentation status from being in control of their lives and futures,” Alexis Bay, board chair of Frontera Fund, said in the release. “Clinic closures and funding cuts to state health programs have only worsened matters.”

However, a federal ruling issued by U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in a lawsuit against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton argues that state officials cannot enforce the Texas abortion ban against those who help Texans obtain an abortion in another state where abortion care is legal.

By providing funding for out-of-state abortions, we hope to help alleviate this burden and empower individuals to make the best choices for themselves and their families.

The lawsuit was filed in August of last year by abortion funds and abortion providers such as Frontera Fund, Fund Texas Choice, Texas Equal Access Fund, The Afiya Center, West Fund, Jane’s Due Process, Clinic Access Support Network, Lilith Fund and Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi, a few days before abortion restriction went into effect.
