15-year-old suspect identified in rural Weslaco murder; is considered ‘armed and dangerous’

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 15-year-old teen accused of gunning down a 44-year-old man Saturday in rural Weslaco.

The sheriff’s office has issued a warrant for the arrest of Mauricio Mata for the murder of David Silva. The sheriff’s office considers Mata to be armed and dangerous.

He is believed to be driving a dark in color SUV and may be accompanied by his juvenile brother, who is a person of interest, the press release stated.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday, sheriff deputies responded to the 2100 block of Esperanza Street in rural Weslaco in reference to a man, later identified as Silva, with gunshot wounds.

Deputies began life-saving measures on arrival, but were not successful.

The sheriff’s office stated this is still an active investigation.
