The city of McAllen saw a decrease in crime in 2022 as reported by the statistics that the McAllen Police Department submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice FBI Uniform Crime Reporting System.

McAllen participates annually in the nationwide statistical data reporting effort commonly known as the UCR, which is transitioning to the National Incident-Based Reporting System, or NIBRS, that began on Jan. 2, 2021.

The report provided shows two tables of statistics, one labeled as Crime Volume Analysis and the second as Crime Rate Analysis, both of which report a decrease in crime overall.

To summarize, the first table shows a decrease in crime by 1.5% and the second shows a decrease by 2.7%.

“Reporting under the NIBRS format reflects 24 offense categories made up of 52 reportable Group A offenses and 10 Group B offenses,” the release said.

A few examples that reflect the decrease in crime include aggravated assault dropping by 6.1%; kidnappings or abductions dropping by 50%; and simple assaults dropping by 3.6%.

As for the crimes against society section, a few examples that reflect the decrease include destruction of property by 8.1%; credit card fraud decreasing by 4.1%; stolen property offenses decreased by 50%; and identity theft by 66.8%.

“Our community strives to prevent crime, to promote public safety and to participate in the investigation of crime when it does occur,” McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said in the release. “At the end of 2022, McAllen recorded its thirteenth consecutive annual crime rate decrease.

“Such outcomes are the result of those community-wide efforts.”
